Rest in peace
I think about this statement a lot.
You hear that someone you once knew has passed away, and the common response is to hope they rest in peace. Individualism has become so deeply ingrained in our society that the only time many people come together is to mourn the loss, rather than celebrate them while they were alive.
Why do so many receive their favourite flowers only at their funerals? Community has become a lost element of our society, eroded by the relentless pace of the capitalist rat race. We’ve forgotten the essence of what it means to be human. Ensuring people live in peace and giving them their flowers while they can enjoy them is arguably more meaningful than merely mourning their absence.
Such flowers are a consolation for the living that they have done enough, rather than a commemoration of the dead.
